What is Standard Form

The standard form is a way of writing down very large or very small numbers in an easy manner. Standard form is frequently used in engineering, medical, and the construction profession.

Scientists use standard form regularly as they have to deal with very large and very small numbers.

What is Standard Form?

Standard form is like scientific notation where a number is represented as a decimal number times a power of 10. The format of the standard number is a x 10n

  • Wherein a stand for Base Number, and n is the power of 10.
  • The base number always has to be equal to or larger than 1 but less than
  • The n is the power of 10 and has to multiply with the first number.

Examples for Standard Form

Example No.1:

270 = 2.7 × 10²

Wherein 10² = 10 × 10 which is 100.

So, 2.7 × 100 = 270

Example No.2:

7,800 = 7.8 × 10³

Wherein 10³ = 10 × 10 × 10 which is 1000.

So, 7.8 × 1000 = 7800

You can write small numbers in standard form as well. The rule is when you write a number in standard form is that first you write down a number between 1 and 10, then write × 10 (to the power of a number).

Frequently Asked Questions – FAQ

What is the standard form in math?

In mathematics, the standard form is defined as the representation or notation of that particular element. It depends on the subject whether it is a number, an equation, or a line. Explanation: The standard form of a straight line is Ax + By = C, whereas the standard form of a quadratic equation is ax2 + bx + c.

How do you write in standard form?

The standard form of an equation is written as Ax + By = C, wherein A, B, and C are integers.

This form of the equation is particularly useful for determining both “x” and “y” intercepts.

What are the rules of standard form?

Standard Form Rules for Linear Equations as below:

  • It must have the form Ax + By = C.
  • A, B, and C must be integers.
  • Integer “A” cannot be negative.
  • A, B, and C should have no common factors other than 1.
