JDM refers to the Japanese Domestic Market. Any car that is designed to be sold in Japan is known as JDM, whereas on the other hand if you find any car that has been designed by the Japanese company having steering on the left-hand side, but it is made to be sold in the US and not in Japan, then it is not JDM.
Let me make you clearer, just because a car is sold by a Japanese company does not mean it is JDM!
JDM is made to be sold in Japan only and not in any other country. There is no doubt at all that JDM cars are quite popular for drifting and stanching, and you might get much respect if you buy the JDM version car.
Japanese domestic market (JDM) refers to Japan’s domestic market for vehicles. For the importer, these terms refer to vehicles and parts designed to conform to Japanese regulations that suit Japanese buyers.

Most people think that JDM refers to any Japanese car, but what does actually mean by the term JDM when it comes to cars.
One of the common delusions is that JDM refers to any Japanese-produced vehicle, which is not at all correct. The JDM specifically means a vehicle that was produced in Japan and is sold within Japan itself, and not outside of the country.
Not at all, as mentioned hereinabove, not all Japanese cars are JDM. There is a popular misconception around (especially in the US) that JDM does just refer to all Japanese manufactured vehicles.
On the other hand, many Japanese companies produced cars for the US, Europe, and other countries which are not JDM. The simple meaning is just being manufactured in Japan does not make a vehicle JDM.

In other words, vehicles available in Japan and offered exclusively to Japanese buyers are known as JDM.
Without spending a small fortune, after 1997 onwards, almost all or newer JDM cars are illegal in the U.S.
Owning or driving illegal JDM cars puts you in much more punishment than drug possession or automatic weapons.
The JDM car refers to the vehicle that was exclusively produced for the Japanese domestic vehicle market.
The Japanese domestic vehicle market is for the people who buy cars in Japan, for use on Japanese roads. So, someone within Japan goes down to their local Toyota dealership and buys a new car to drive to work.
