Microsoft, the tech giant is rumoured to be adding hyperlinks support to Excel. The popular spreadsheet programme will soon accept hyperlinks within current comments, according to Windows Central.

It was also mentioned that the feature may be found in a newly updated entry on the Microsoft 365 roadmap. Support for hyperlinks within modern comments could appear as early as February 2022, but this isn’t a guarantee.

Word, Excel, and PowerPoint all have modern comments. Modern comments, which are designed for collaboration, support @mentions, which can notify others through email.

It is currently feasible to add hyperlinks to notes, but these are not the same as comments, according to the study. Support for hyperlinks in Excel’s modern comments should improve people’s workflows and make it easier to share web content, according to the company.

What is Hyperlink Function?

The HYPERLINK function generates a shortcut that opens a document saved on a network server, intranet, or the Internet, or moves to another position in the current workbook. Excel moves to the specified URL or opens the document when you click a cell that contains a HYPERLINK function.

What are the arguments for Hyperlink function syntax?

Syntax: HYPERLINK(link_location, [friendly_name])

The following are the arguments for the Hyperlink function:

Link location required

The path to the document to be opened, as well as the file name. A document’s link location can refer to a specific cell or named range in an Excel worksheet or workbook, or a bookmark in a Microsoft Word document. A path to a file on a hard disc drive can be specified. The path can also be a server’s universal naming convention (UNC) path (in Microsoft Excel for Windows) or an Internet or intranet’s Uniform Resource Locator (URL) path.

The hyperlink function in Excel for the web is only valid for web addresses (URLs). A text string surrounded in quotation marks or a reference to a cell that contains the link as a text string can be used as link location.

When you click the cell, an error displays if the jump provided in link location does not exist or cannot be browsed.

Friendly Name

It is an optional parameter. In the cell, the jump text or numeric value is displayed. Friendly name is highlighted and displayed in blue. If friendly name is not specified, the jump text is the link location.

A value, a text string, a name, or a cell containing the jump text or value can all be used as friendly name.

The cell displays the error instead of the jump text if friendly name returns an error value (for example, #VALUE!).
