For the first time in eight years, Google is updating the logo of its Chrome browser.
The colour palette hasn’t changed much; red, blue, green, and yellow are still the major colours, but the saturation has been increased and shadows have been removed. Overall, the new logo appears to be fairly unchanged, but it does appear to be more vivid.
In a post on Twitter, Elvin Hu, a Google Chrome designer, gives a sneak peek at the new logo.
“In today’s Chrome Canary update, some of you may have spotted a new icon. Yes, Chrome’s brand icons are being refreshed for the first time in 8 years. In a tweet, Hu stated, “The new symbols will start to show across your devices soon.”
By removing the shadows, the icon has been simplified and flattened. The colours are more vibrant, and the proportions are altered, making the large blue ball in the centre appear larger.
Google is also adjusting it with different permutations to make it seem better on Windows, macOS, and iOS.
“We created OS-specific customizations. We want the icons to feel recognizably Chrome, but also well-crafted for each OS. For example, on Windows, the icons take on an obviously graduated look, appearing at home on Windows 10 and 11,” Hu added.
With the release of Chrome 100, users will be able to see the redesigned Google Chrome logo on all devices.
According to Hu, if you use Chrome Canary (the developer version of Chrome), you’ll notice the new icon right away, but it’ll take a few months for everyone else.
