This article is all about that you need to know about the 94th Academy Awards nominations, which will be announced on Tuesday morning.
Predicting the Oscar nominations this year feels a little like fumbling your way through a cave in the dark, rather than the customary beautifully lit path lined with winners of precursor awards.
Table of Contents
Films and actresses would have gone to the top of the field by now in a typical year. But, with the Golden Globes canceled but not canceled and the Critics’ Choice Awards rescheduled from January to March due to the Omicron variation, who knows what’s on Oscar voters’ minds?
Between January 27 and February 1, 9,847 Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences members had the opportunity to vote on the 276 films nominated for the 94th Academy Awards. Biopics, serious plays, and historical epics are among their favorites. But it doesn’t rule out the possibility of a blockbuster like “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” which nearly single-handedly revived falling box-office receipts at the end of last year, or the James Bond picture “No Time to Die.”
So fire up your pancake griddle, get yourself a cup of coffee, and prepare yourself for some drama. Unlike the March ceremony in Hollywood, which has been known to go over four hours, there will be no downtime between the reading of the 120 submissions in 23 categories – and there will be no musical acts. It’s unlikely that the whole event will last more than half an hour. On Tuesday, here’s what you can expect.
First, double-check that you’re on the appropriate day: The nomination will be announced at 8:18 a.m. Eastern, 5:18 a.m. Pacific on Tuesday. Sharp.
The live stream will be available on Oscar.com, Oscars.org, the Academy’s social media channels (Twitter, YouTube, Facebook), and national broadcast and streaming news programs such as ABC’s “Good Morning America” and “ABC News Live.” You can see the Full List of Nominees here…
Technically, sure, but you’ll have a hard time avoiding spoilers. Seeing it live is much more enjoyable.
The announcement will be hosted by Leslie Jordan, a sitcom actor best known for his appearances on “Will & Grace” and “Murphy Brown,” and Tracee Ellis Ross, actress of “Black-ish.”
“Belfast,” “Dune,” “Licorice Pizza,” “The Power of the Dog,” and “West Side Story” are safe bets in the best picture category following their Directors Guild nominations. However, now that the Academy has decided that there would be ten nominations regardless of what happens (in previous years, there were up to ten), we could be in for some shocks.
If Jane Campion’s Netflix western “The Power of the Dog” receives a nomination for best director, she will become the first female director to be nominated twice. If Spielberg is cast in “West Side Story,” we may see a replay of their 1994 duel, in which Spielberg’s Holocaust drama “Schindler’s List” triumphed over Campion’s period classic “The Piano.”
Also in play: Rita Moreno, 90, might become the oldest performer ever to be nominated for an Academy Award if she is nominated for a best-supporting actress – a long shot considering the crowded field this year. Beyoncé might also receive her first Oscar nod for “Being Alive,” which she co-wrote with Dixson for the film “King Richard.”
A Big NO! Before the TikTok sensation became a surprise chart-topper, studios had to submit their picks, and Disney chose “Dos Oruguitas,” a song penned by Lin-Manuel Miranda from “Encanto.” If it’s any consolation, you can spend three and a half minutes listening to this Miranda impersonator replicate what the demo recording must’ve sounded like with Miranda singing all ten parts.
In “The Power of the Dog,” our Projectionist columnist Kyle Buchanan predicts a best actor nomination for Benedict Cumberbatch’s outstanding performance and a supporting actor candidacy for breakout star Kodi Smit-McPhee. He also believes Olivia Colman (“The Lost Daughter”), Nicole Kidman (“Being the Ricardos”), and Lady Gaga (“House of Gucci”) will compete for best actress, with Ariana DeBose (“West Side Story”) as the front-runner in the supporting actress category.
But he also has some surprises in store: The best director nomination for Steven Spielberg for “West Side Story,” which bombed at the box office, and a supporting actress nomination for Judi Dench in “Belfast.”
