NVIDIA Announces DLSS 4 with Multi-Frame Generation
At CES 2025, NVIDIA’s CEO Jensen Huang introduced DLSS 4, a new AI-powered technology that includes multi-frame generation. NVIDIA also showcased its latest graphics cards: RTX 5090, RTX 5080, RTX 5070 Ti, and RTX 5070.
What is a Multi-Frame Generation?
Multi-frame generation is a new feature that uses AI to create up to three extra frames for every frame rendered traditionally. This can increase game frame rates by as much as eight times. For example:
In the game Warhammer 40,000: Darktide, performance improved by 10%, and 400 MB less memory was used when playing at 4K resolution with maximum settings.
This new technology is:
- 40% faster than previous models.
- Uses 30% less video memory.
- Requires rendering only one frame to generate multiple frames.
- Performance Improvements
- At launch, DLSS 4 will work with 75 games and apps. Some impressive results shared by NVIDIA include:
Cyberpunk 2077 runs at 238 FPS on an RTX 5090 with DLSS 4, compared to 106 FPS on an RTX 4090 with DLSS 3.5 using full ray tracing.
Other Upgrades
NVIDIA has also enhanced other technologies, such as:
-
- DLSS Ray Reconstruction for improved lighting effects.
- DLSS Super Resolution for sharper images.
- DLAA for better visual quality.
These updates now use transformer architecture, the same AI technology behind tools like ChatGPT and Gemini. This improves:
- Stability in motion (fewer glitches in fast scenes).
- Fewer visual errors.
- Smoother and more detailed rendering.
- Background on DLSS
NVIDIA introduced DLSS 3 two years ago to improve performance by generating extra frames. In August 2023, NVIDIA launched DLSS 3.5, which featured AI-based ray reconstruction for better lighting and realism.
Key Points
- DLSS 4 uses multi-frame generation to create up to three extra frames for every rendered frame, boosting game performance up to 8x.
- Games like Cyberpunk 2077 saw FPS increase significantly on the RTX 5090 with DLSS 4 compared to DLSS 3.5.
- The technology is 40% faster and uses 30% less memory than before.
- A multi-frame generation will be available in 75 games and apps at launch.
- DLSS 4 is based on transformer AI architecture, providing better motion stability, fewer artifacts, and smoother visuals.
- NVIDIA has improved other tools like DLSS Ray Reconstruction and DLSS Super Resolution for enhanced graphics.
